3D: Poetry slam

A poetry slam is a competitive art of performance poetry, where both writing and performance are emphasized. Writer's feelings are expressed in a very strong way and the poem is emotional and powerful because it tells personal stories.

After reading The Wife of Bath from "The Canterbury Tales"  and The Wife of Bafa, a poem written by the Nigerian poet Patience Agabi, it's your turn to write a slam poem!

Watch the video to get an idea of what a slam poem is.

GROUP WORK

1) Agree on the woman character you want to write about. Choose her profession, social status, physical features, clothes, age, nationality, cultural background.

2) Try to think as you were the woman and write the poem.

3) Don't forget to give a title to your poem "The wife of..."

4) Try to include the expressions and the phrasal verbs with do/make we've seen in Unit 3 (Performer First)

5 TIPS

  1. Make it original. The written piece must be original. The story being performed for competition needs to be your own work.
  2. Time. Each poet has 3 minutes to perform. While practicing your poem, time yourself to make sure you do not go over the time limit.
  3. Simple & Relatable. Your poem should be able to reach your audience the first time it’s heard. Read and perform it for your classmates, Ask them what is clear and what is not. .
  4. Rhythmic & Passionate. Your poem should have a rhythm that shows through your passionate performance.
  5. Multimedia. You can add a video, a background image, etc. if you like.

You may use the RHYMING DICTIONARY if you need a ryhme.

Here you find the slam poems you've created.
